Since the demise of his Micra my stepdad had to buy a new car for a tiny amount of money. He ended up with a £500 saxo. I still haven't seen it, since I've been too busy to visit family. However today he rang me saying it's "chuggy" and slower than his Micra.

Micra quoted 0-60= 15.5s

Saxo 0-60= 12.4s

Something is wrong here. Also he tells me the horn fell off because the bracket rusted through. So I bet it has a rust problem too.

Man buys £500 Citroen, finds that it's crap, is surprised.

Should have bought a Hyundai.

The only Hyundai I saw in that price range was an Accent with a severe rust problem. That said I offered to buy him a nicer car so he didn't have to resort to paying £500, but he didn't want the burden of paying me back. He may soon regret that decision.

Pieces are rusting off -> may have a rust problem.

It all adds up.

To be fair it was just the horn bracket, the rest of the car might be okay. I really hope the rest of the car is okay...

check the spark plugs. I changed them on the focus and it made so much difference. Stopped it juddering away at low rpm.

My dad used to say, "Hope in one hand, shit in the other and see which one fills up first."

I'll be checking them next time I visit in April, along with everything else. These cars apparently can have head gasket issues so I really hope it's something simple like old filters and plugs.

Fingers crossed then :) do you know if you stepdad took off the oil cap to look for mayo? Old filters and plugs would certainly do that

Headgasket on these shouldn't be to hard to do as a worst case. Days work at most as long as it doesn't need a skim

Na he wont have done anything like that.

It's not a hard job but I don't have the time to do it and he doesn't have the know how to do it...

Plus even the £100 odd it is for the gasket kit is something he'd notice.

fair. Well if it is it you have always got stuff like steel seal. If it's not too far gone it's amazing what that stuff can do.

I really doubt you can find nicer £500 Hyundais than £500 Citroën Saxos. And even if one could, I certainly wouldn't go for one. Hyundai making decent cars is a relatively recent development.
